Our chosen charity partner, Beam, is an organisation helping homeless people and refugees find their feet. During our partnership so far, we’ve helped to change the lives of almost 650 people, supporting over 360 individuals into work and over 200 people into housing.
This month, we have helped Alisha, Liudmyla and Dominic get one step closer to the life they desire to live. Read their full stories below...
Alisha has big plans for the future, seeing herself working hard to earn a good wage so she can be comfortable in life. In two years time, she would like to be renting her own place and working a permanent job.
Alisha wants to work in a warehouse role as a pathway to save money, allowing herself to become more independent and get to where she wants to be in the future. Alisha thinks this is a good fit for her as she has worked in some jobs before that required the same skills and she is a great team worker.
Once she finds some financial stability, Alisha hopes to find her dream job in finance. Ever since she was younger, maths has always been her preference as opposed to English and science.
"When I think of what makes me happy, it is going to the gym and going on walks. I love being around pets too."
Liudmyla came from Ukraine last year when the war started and spent her first year here with her host in North London. When she asked Liudmyla to vacate the room, she faced the huge challenge of finding new accommodation.
Due to the high demand for rental properties, private landlords and estate agencies didn't even want to invite Liudmyla for viewings. It’s been made even more difficult because of her age and being a pensioner. She became homeless after looking for a property for 4 months without success.
Liudmyla's biggest challenge was contacting various landlords as English is not her first language. She could not go on this journey without the support of Beam and she is also grateful to her son who always reassured her and helped her to communicate with various people through the whole house hunting process.
Liudmyla is very happy to launch her page on Beam so other people like her in difficult situations can see that anything is possible with the right support.
"When I move into a new home, it will feel like a new beginning and I will have a brighter future to look forward to. I would like to continue to live safely in the UK, learn English, and be more independent and active. I also sincerely wish for peace in Ukraine so I would be able to travel to Ukraine again!"
When Dominic was 16, he pursued his dream and enlisted in the army as a chef, driven by his deep desire to serve his country. Over a decade, he cooked for fellow soldiers, preparing meals for groups ranging from 15 to 400. These experiences boosted Dominic's confidence, and he wore his uniform with immense pride. He gained a family in the military.
In his final year, an unexpected back injury changed his path. At the same time, he had also started a new relationship, and it felt like the right moment to bid farewell to the army and explore life beyond the military. Life was filled with hope as Dominic embraced a loving relationship, moved in with his partner, and found out they were expecting a boy.
However, the strain of providing for his family as well as the pandemic took its toll, leading to Dominic's battle with depression and anxiety, along with the loss of his home and job. Now, with Beam's support, he is determined to rebuild. Starting over is not easy, and a laptop would significantly aid his job search. Assistance with clothing and travel expenses would also help him greatly.
"I'm on a journey to rebuild and be the best father I can be."
A huge thank you to all of the employers we partner with for redeeming their gift cards and helping to bring these donations to those who really need them.
