Our chosen charity partner, Beam, is an organisation helping homeless people and refugees find their feet. During our partnership so far, we’ve helped to change the lives of almost 650 people, supporting over 360 individuals into work and over 200 people into housing.
This month, we have helped Ann, Halyna and Diana in their journey to living the life they dream of. Read their full stories below...
Alisha's story
Alisha had to end her customer service job because she was pregnant and it was becoming too hard to work and keep healthy. Unfortunately, Alisha didn't qualify for maternity pay because she hadn't worked there long enough, so she started to claim benefits and had her baby earlier this year.
Currently, she is living with her parents but it has been hard for her to go from working full time to not having a job. Alisha really wants to start working again and build up the funds to rent her own home with her son. As he is a baby, her plan is to work from home, where her mum can help look after him, until he goes to nursery. Alisha knows it won't be long before she is working again, she just needs a bit of support to secure a job that allows her to work online.
"Really I just want want to get back into a stable job to regain my independence."
Halyna's story
After the war started in Ukraine, Halyna and her three children were forced to flee to the UK, where kind people offered a roof above their heads. Unfortunately, after a year they had to find their own accommodation, because it was only meant to be short-term and had become uncomfortable to live in overcrowded conditions both for her children and for their UK hosts.
Halyna was referred to Beam, who will help her find a home where she and her children will feel safe and happy.
Sometimes Halyna feels down that she's alone with three children in another country. Knowing other people are eager to help helps her feel positive and gives her a great amount of energy.
"When I'm settled in my home, it will be a new page in my life. I want to return to my pre-war occupation in the banking world and want everyone around me to be happy and healthy always."
Diana's story
Diana's dream for the future is to be in a stable job that she has the opportunity to progress in. She would love to be able to utilise her skills and experience to make a difference for others. She has seen people go through very hard times and she would like to be able to do something to help those in a similar situation.
The thing that makes Diana the most happy is spending time with her family. She also loves baking cakes. She enjoys creating birthday cakes for her friends and family and her signature flavour is vanilla.
"In two years time I want to be in a position where I am financially stable with a great work-life balance and doing a job that I love."
