Design is a creative act, and we do need time to replenish and recover. That isn’t slacking off; it’s a strategic part of what it means to be a creative thinker and a designer.

We need to build in those periods, and we can call it whatever we like. Sometimes people call it R&D; sometimes it’s called discovery or research. But we do need to create that time for our teams to take a break from all the busy work.

I think that’s when creativity really creeps in. It’s a really good thing to do, and it’s a great practice to role model for teams as well.
