Janis Thomas shares advice for how to negotiate a pay rise

Managing Director at Look Fabulous Forever and experienced Marketing Leader, Janis Thomas, shares key advice for marketers looking for a salary increase. This interview took place at our Women in Marketing event on January 16th, 2025.

So I think when you're negotiating a pay rise, yes you want to do your research, but what you want to do is you want to open the negotiation with the number that you're scared to ask for - the one that you know that will make people wince. Because if you open the negotiation - and you should go first in these conversations - with the number that scares you, you're then going to come down to a number that both parties are happy with. But, you've set the precedent that that what you're looking for, that's what you're aspiring to. Then it's much easier to have those conversations down the road to reopen that conversation of "well you know that I want to get to X, let's have a conversation about how I get there", and it's much easier than starting again from scratch.
