What does a SEO Executive do?


Usually reporting into an SEO Manager, the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Executive is responsible for growing organic website traffic by executing the SEO strategy. They will support on all search engine marketing activity, including keyword research, link building and technical audits.


Key responsibilities

The job description can look different based on a number of factors, including industry, team structure and business objectives. However, the core responsibilities tend to stay the same. Below is what the average day looks like for a Search Engine Optimisation Executive:

  • Update landing pages: Support the content team on the execution of the content strategy, optimising copy with SEO best practice in mind.
  • Write and update metas: Write meta descriptions and titles that will boost the click-through rate of web pages. Track their performance and update where necessary.
  • Link building: Ensure the website is linking correctly both internally and externally. Work with the PR team to ensure that external content is relevant and trustworthy.
  • Keyword research: Conduct detailed keyword research using a variety of SEO tools.
  • Monitor competitors: Assist with content gap analysis to identify potential threats and opportunities.
  • Track website analytics: Use Google Analytics to monitor, report on and analyse website performance, feeding back to key stakeholders.
  • Support technical audits: Support on technical audits, implementing required updates.
  • Stay up to date with trends and changes: Keep up to date with the latest trends and developments in search engine algorithms.


Skills and requirements

When hiring for an SEO Executive, the ideal candidate will have the following skills and experiences:

  • Previous experience in a digital marketing, content or SEO job
  • Understanding of SEO tools (such as SEMRush, Screaming Frog or Ahrefs), content management systems (CMS) and Google Analytics
  • Highly organised, with the ability to adapt quickly and work to deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Passion for the SEO industry

Average salary

The average pay of a full time, permanent SEO Executive is £28,000 - £45,000. For a contractor, you can expect to pay a day rate of £150 - £225.
