Being one of the first 2 graduates a business hires was always going to be daunting. Making that jump from student life to working life felt huge at the time, probably not helped by the two-day gap in between! But the business you choose to join plays a huge part in how you find that transition, and I do feel like I made the right decision for me in joining 3Search.

I think it’s fair to say I fell into recruitment. Having undertaken a number of legal placements throughout university, I decided halfway through the final year that Law wasn’t for me. This was then followed by the dreaded question- well what do I do now? I knew I wasn’t looking for something overly corporate and started looking into graduate opportunities at start-ups/agencies. I applied for a job with 3Search through Indeed (kind of by accident!) and here we are.

I’m not sure recruitment was ever a career path that was spoken about by my career advisors at university, but then again what do you do with an English degree? Except for the general assumption that you want to be a teacher! I interviewed with the 3 directors at 3Search before I even finished university and immediately realised it was for me. I loved Uni, but hearing about the competitive nature of recruitment and how rewarding it was, I couldn’t wait to quit my holiday job at Nando’s and start at 3Search (although the discount is sorely missed).

I joined at a similar time to my colleague Jasmin, who was also a recent graduate and we went through the training process together. It’s been great to progress with someone alongside you and hit goals at similar times, culminating in us both hitting our promotion target earlier this year within 9 months of joining and having a joint celebratory lunch! We now both sit in the top 10 ranking of highest billers across the whole business!

The transition from University to full-time employment was much easier than anticipated, helped by making my first placement within four weeks of starting, and hitting my first ‘lunch club’ target within 6 months for top performers. I now work completely autonomously within the business, building my own desk of Professional Services clients, which we count as Law, Accountancy, Property and Management Consultancy firms, with a specific focus on Marketing/ Digital Marketing roles. I get really excited about the clients I work with and bringing in new business, and I strive to be honest and consultative with all of my clients to completely streamline their recruitment processes. Ultimately, matching the best talent with the best jobs.

The great social life also definitely helped in starting a full-time job in London! From regular weekly drinks (company card often behind the bar) to lunch club for high achievers, great Christmas parties and perhaps the best of all, quarterly parties. These have included white water rafting, clay pigeon shooting, karaoke, bowling, days at the races, and most recently; Underground Cooking School – would definitely recommend! We’ve been to Michelin starred restaurants for lunch club, and I’m even halfway to my target for our incentive trip to New York in April! The generous commission structure and unlimited holidays are also worth mentioning, as are charity events we take part in throughout the year e.g. Vertical Rush.

From a work point of view, with regular sit-downs with my manager, external training programmes and challenging but realistic targets, I feel like I’ve been pushed hard but also welcome the challenge. I’ve never been babied and although it’s been tough at times, I’m constantly trying to push myself harder and improve my processes for clients, whilst also building my network and earning a reputation within my chosen market.

It sounds cheesy but I’m genuinely excited about where my career is going and how I can develop it in the future! Recruitment isn’t something that is pushed upon us at Uni, but if you’ve just graduated and you’re money motivated and competitive, whilst looking for a career where you get rewarded for hard work; then recruitment might be for you! Or if you’re a Marketer or a Business in Professional Services, I’d also love to hear from you and discuss potentially working together.
