Category: Career Advice, Job Search

There’s no doubt about it, job hunting is a tedious process. It can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months to successfully land yourself a new job. When you feel like your job search is dragging on, it’s easy to feel disheartened when you’re not going anywhere. But don’t quit your search just yet! Staying focused and motivated is key to finding a new role.

If you’re currently unemployed, then treat your job search like it’s your current profession. Get into the routine of waking up early, creating a to-do list and cracking on with the day. Stay focused on ticking off tasks, like updating your CV, applying for jobs and so on. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of passively searching for a role and losing focus, so this blog aims to give you some advice about staying motivated throughout your job search.

#1 Set yourself a realistic goal

You probably have a good idea of what your dream job looks like. If you set yourself a realistic goal, it will enable you to stay motivated. Even if it’s as simple as applying to a certain amount of relevant jobs a day, getting a first stage interview or reaching out to professional contacts within your network. American Psychologist Edwin Locke explored“Attitudes toward a Theory of Task Motivation and Incentives” the key points that Locke and Latham made were motivational goals need the following dimensions: challenge, clarity, commitment, feedback and complexity. Goals need to be clear and measurable. Setting yourself small tasks within a bigger challenge can make you feel good! It’ll feel like you’re achieving small steps towards your main goal.

#2 Go above and beyond

Think about how many other professionals will be searching for the same job as you. To really be proactive in finding roles, think about attending career workshops or events to accelerate your job search. You’ll meet people that are actively job-hunting too, if you find something that could be perfect for one of your job seeker friends, tell them! They’ll do the same for you too. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people will enable you to keep your job search going.

#3 Refine your Social Media presence

I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a strong LinkedIn profile as part of a job search in 2018. Stand up and stand out. LinkedIn is a fantastic place to demonstrate your skills, experience and make new connections. If there are things on your CV that aren’t on your LinkedIn profile, ask yourself why? LinkedIn profiles are now key to a job search, so if it can go on your CV, why can’t you add it to your LinkedIn profile. Businesses will look at LinkedIn profiles but you can stand out to recruiters and organisations by making sure that you change your settings to show certain people you are ‘open to new opportunities.’ We explored this in a previous blog which I’d recommend taking a read of to find out more.

In general, be active on LinkedIn. Follow and connect with people who work for businesses that you would be interested in working with. Share content and be busy on the platform. For general tips on creating a killer LinkedIn profile, take a read of another previous blog of ours here.

It’s worth cleaning up your social media profiles. A study by CareerBuilder revealed that 70 percent of employers now use social media to screen candidates before hiring them. If you’re worried about what employers can see, it’s always worth double-checking your privacy settings.

#4 Don’t feel like you’re not going anywhere

What’s the point, I’m not getting anywhere, why bother? Are there better people out there? These are all thoughts that enter our heads when struggling to find a new job. It’s always disheartening not hearing back or falling short in your job search. Bouncing back from interview rejection isn’t that bad, as we explored. The way people look for jobs has changed so much in the last 3-5 years so you may feel out of your comfort zone if you’ve not looked for a role for a while.

Don’t let the momentum slip, stay motivated and you’ll be on your way to that dream role. If we’ve inspired you to drive your job search, check out our current vacancies here and please get in touch to find out more.
