The Digital Marketing Director is responsible for developing, implementing and managing digital marketing initiatives that drive revenue growth. Managing a team of digital marketers, this role oversees activity across all digital marketing channels - from email to website to social media.

  • Define the digital marketing strategy: Create a leading marketing strategy across all digital channels. 
  • Collaboration: Work with the communications, sales and marketing teams to ensure a cohesive plan. Ensure that the strategy aligns with offline marketing efforts and wider business objectives.
  • Content distribution: Develop and drive a strategy that distributes content to appropriate audiences, ensuring customer satisfaction and engagement is at the forefront.
  • Create a leading team: Hire, manage and develop a cross-functional team who will execute the strategy. This team can include generalist Digital Marketing Managers and channel experts across CRM, social media, website and paid marketing.
  • Budget management: Ensure the right resources and budget are in place to generate results.
  • Track and report on campaigns: Monitor digital marketing campaigns to ensure they're in budget, on time and delivering results. The Director will work with the Head of Marketing/CMO to communicate KPIs to the board.
  • Manage relationships: Identify, build and manage internal and external relationships vital to the success of the marketing plan. This includes managing agency support.


Skills and requirements

To be a Digital Marketing Director, you should have the following skills and experiences:

  • Minimum of 10 years in digital marketing - this can include specialist and generalist digital marketing jobs
  • Experience leading a team and managing budgets to drive results
  • Fundamental understanding of SEO, performance, social media, content and email marketing
  • Analytical, data-driven mindset, with experience using Google Analytics for reporting
  • Passion for the industry, staying up to date with the latest trends

Average salary

The average salary of a permanent, full time Digital Director is £100,000 - £150,000. Meanwhile, the day rate is £600 - £1,200 for contractors.
