With candidates placing more emphasis than ever on pay, it's positive to see salaries increase by 7.7% in 2024. Director of digital marketing recruitment, Michael Judkins, reports, "A 7% to 10% salary increase is typical for someone moving jobs." Brands shouldn’t be offering lower than this to ensure that desired candidates accept their offer. To make sure you're paying the market average, we highly recommend downloading our salary guide.
Despite this average increase, just 41% of digital marketers reported receiving a pay rise last year. With 39% of employees looking for a new job to increase their pay, renumeration is the biggest driver in talent attraction and retention.
A number of factors that influence pay ranges - the top three are:
The size of a business can greatly impact earning potential. Smaller brands tend to have a limited budget available when recruiting, which can impact salaries. However, there are many other benefits to working for a start-up, including increased flexible working and the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment.
The sector you work in usually dictates how in demand your skills are. For instance, some industries, such as entertainment and leisure, will focus more on out of home advertising. However, there is consistently a high demand for performance marketers in direct-to-consumer brands. Sectors where talent is harder to identify usually offer higher salaries.
Experienced professionals in digital marketing management can expect higher pay than those who are earlier in their careers. While this may seem obvious, it's true that two Performance Marketing Managers can earn very different salaries. Someone transitioning into the role, with just some exposure to performance, can expect to be paid £50,000. Meanwhile, those with over 5 years of experience in performance marketing could expect upwards of £65,000.
