After all that time perfecting your CV, polishing your LinkedIn profile and acing your interview, your new job offer has come in. Now you need to tell your current boss you’re leaving, but what happens if they don’t want you to walk out the door? This blog aims to help you when it comes to dealing with a counteroffer from your existing employer.

#1 Two Offers, One Problem

Now you have the luxury of having two offers on the table, right? Unfortunately, it makes things a bit tricky. Chances are, your current boss will try and tempt you to stay by offering you a pay rise, bigger role or ‘sell’ back to you all the things that have been frustrating you over the last few months. A resignation can often be a highly emotional conversation with line managers who sometimes take things very personal, to begin with.

Your line manager is likely to switch to a slightly panicked mindset, as they see screening all the applicants, interviewing and training costs for your replacement in the coming months ahead. Think about it this way, your new offer has come from a place where you have demonstrated value and they are genuinely impressed by you. Whereas a counteroffer may not be so sincere.

#2 Discover What’s On Offer

Chances are your manager will give you plenty of incentives to stay. But you need to find out what else is on offer, will your manager focus on committing to satisfying your needs or issues within your role? Although, if your current salary was the biggest driver for you to look for a new role, then clearly a counteroffer could be of interest. However, in our experience, candidates who accept their counteroffers are then searching for a new job a few months after committing to stay as the reasons that brought them to the job market in the first place are still there!

#3 Let’s Talk Relationships

Resigning is always a challenging task, it’s vital that you resign the ‘correct’ way as we explored. Resigning in a way that allows you not to burn bridges with your existing employer would be beneficial. Leaving on good terms will enable you to keep the friends and connections you made as you continue to grow your network and take on your new opportunity. If you do not decide to stick with your current employer, use it as an opportunity to thank them for their offer and reiterate that you have enjoyed your time whilst working at the organisation but you need to remain committed to your decision. Unfortunately, venting off reasons why you didn’t enjoy working at the business won’t help, from our experience. You never know, you may encounter your old manager and business again! It’s a small world out there!

#4 Remember why you thought about a new job in the first place!

Before accepting your counteroffer, it’s important to note that 80% of candidates who accept a counteroffer from their current employer end up leaving within 6 months. A counteroffer may satisfy your salary expectations but you need to focus on other key areas for you such as responsibility or getting a stronger work-life balance. If you’re truly worth the increase in salary and responsibility, why was this missed for the period of time you were unhappy? In this instance, it’s best to consider joining an organisation that allows you to grow and flourish within your role.

Do you need to consider why you started looking for a new job in the first place? Was it career advancement? Salary? Lack of value? You need to consider that as big as the terms of your counteroffer could be, the issue is that you will be in the same role, same office and the same people. Read here for advice on knowing if it’s time to move job!

Overall, it’s crucial that you weigh up both offers. If you do decide to stay, be very careful! Agreeing to carry on, usually, isn’t recommended. You could be considered a ‘risk’ and your loyalty may be questioned, jeopardising any future promotions and growth. Also, if you agree to stay but end up leaving in the next few months, this will no doubt burn your relationships in the long and short term. If you do decide to move on, do what you can to make the transition as smooth as possible, hear your boss out but ultimately you need to stick with your guns!
